Anne Senstad

Anne Katrine Senstad is a multi disciplinary Norwegian artist who lives and works in New York. She works with Light, Installation, Photography, Video and Land Art. She was educated at Parsons School of Design and The New School in New York.

She is currently working with the internationally renown Architecture firm Snøhetta, who are responsible for the Ground Zero Memorial in NY and SF Moma’s extension, where she has been awarded the public art commission for their first US building – A performing Arts Center in Ohio. Senstad will be creating a monumental mural consisting of 39 photographic, aluminum and plexi glas panels extending over 24 ft high and 80 ft long (10x 30 meters). The piece entitled The Eternal is scheduled to officially open December 2011.

She is also currently working on a major video and sculptural installation at the Fundation Proa Museum and ThisIsNotAGallery in Buenos Aires, opening Sept 2011. The two venue installations will include all new works based on her color projections from The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX and Mexico nature Projections.

Anne Katrine Senstad has exhibited widely internationally, including Zendai MOMA in Shanghai, MOMA of Ukraine, Museum da Casa Brasileira in Sao Paulo, The Noorderlicht institution in The Netherlands, Gary Snyder Fine Art, Bjorn Ressle Gallery and Elga Wimmer Gallery in New York, with Pink Gallery in Seoul, Korea, Galleri JMS in Oslo and Stiftelsen 3,14 in Bergen, Norway. In 2007 she showed photographic abstract color works from The Pink Project series in 2 simultaneous solo exhibitions entitled Light Writes Always in Plural at Bjorn Ressle Gallery and Houston Center for Photography. In June 2007 her work was chosen by the Nobel Peace center in Oslo to represent the travelling exhibition Envisioning Change, which was hosted by The Bozar Museum in Brussels and the The Ministry of Culture Monaco in 2008. Her extensive work in New Orleans began in 2007 and includes the Site Specific Light installation, The Light House with KK Projects, and during the first New Orleans Biennial; Prospect 1 in 2008. Furthermore, from March 2009 - November 2009 Senstad created an 1,4 acre Agricultural Land/Earth art piece in Theriot, Louisiana entitled The Sugarcane Labyrinth that was also documented to become a film and covered on Fox Channel 8 News.

Senstad investigates light, color and sound by photographing pure light sources and their environmental behavioral patterns – working with the idea of the essence of space, time and frequencies. The pure light-scapes she creates, manifest as circular expansive shapes within the perfect square, or in the format of a light and sound panel landscape talk about the essence of light, color and sound. In her series The Pink Project, she moved towards a light and color landscape relating to reductive space and developing into Triptych and Diptych mural works. The series is about the phenomenon of color and light, based on her site and time specific light installations. In her latest series Colour Kinesthesia from 2010 she has worked with multiple projections onto spaces and corners, which are then recorded onto film, becoming sculptural light and color photographs concerned with absorption and experience of color itself in movement.Her Video work is concerned with the polemics of light, time, space and architectonic relations in the environment. The video pieces are meditative and subliminal in their visual language. As she has developed her sensitivity towards site specific and land art, she continues to explore new fields of expression, yet true to her photographic visual language in that all works are created for photographic documentation and video exhibitions as completing the circle.

Her artist book containing 50 portraits of Norwegians; The Norwegians was released in 2005, with essays by Gerhard Sander of The August Sander Archives and acclaimed Norwegian author Thure Erik Lund. Her second book entitled The Norwegians,Women as a part two of The Norwegians, was published 2009, supported by Arts Council Norway, with essays by art critic Kjetil Røed and Gallery director and art historian Malin Barth.

She has since 1996 received grants from Arts Council Norway, Office for Contemporary Art Norway, The Norwegian Photography Foundation, The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Buenos Aires and in Ottawa. Included are full year artist scholarship, exhibition, travel and project grants. In 2000 The Norwegian State Broadcasting Corp. NRK, made a 35 min portrait documentary on Senstad, which was broadcast in 8 countries.
