Ryung Kal is an artist, who plays and expresses with color and form in her paintings. She shows abstract expressionism in her work, which is visualized by using colors. Her art works have serenity with the arrangement of line, and the selections of the colors she used are splendid. Yet her work can be felt cold and rational, but also it is reverie which requires viewer’s attention. Therefore, her paintings look interesting with the characterized ambivalent, what we can see on the canvas, such as the curves, diagonal lines, straight lines, the forms of nature, the organic forms and the figurative forms, in acrylic which is transparent like water color, or opaque, that shows us indirectly the co-existence of the nature and human beings.

Let’s look at her art education back ground. She used to like to draw since when she was a little girl. Then, when she grew up, she went to Hong Ik University in Seoul, Korea majoring in Paintings, and she received her BFA in 1982 from the university. After that, she went to San Francisco, and studied for paintings at San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). After she received MFA in Paintings from SFAI, she stayed in the United States for 5 years. For the years, she had exhibited her work actively through several competitions, and had a couple of one person shows. Thus her journey as an artist has been started, and her works in 90s was influenced by Surrealism such as Marc Chagall and Giorgio De Chrico. Maybe that is why her paintings are neither quite Korean nor American. In other words, she didn’t borrow from surrealism completely, but rather combined the poetry and the form of the symbolic and aesthetic of it. Then her art was based in her own personal experience which was based in Marc Chagall’s style, and she borrowed the lines and circles from Giorgio de Chirico

Thus, Ryung Kal traced the origin of the Modern Art, and it was expressed as formative elements of painting in organic forms. If she had experimental and basic questions which made the layers of meaning of her work in the 90s, her work became simplified and the circle is embodied in an organic body in the 21th Century. Even though, I am not trying to analysis her works by yearly, but if I trace what she has been pursuing in colors and forms which make echoes, is interesting. Just like that from the year 2006 to 2007, her painting was made to be simplified human body, and it continued the transformation, which mainly plays geometrical form of the nature and straight lines. Thus, the variation of colors and forms became a reliable partner for her journeys as an artist. Then, finally from the year 2010, she started to change to using cool color and geometrical form, she was searching and exploring for images of woman. Her works which were created in the 21st century are so static and vitality making circle lines, also expressed in warm colors like woman’s lips, lipstick, perfume bottles, ribbons, a shopping bag. These lines, colors, faces are much softer and they seem like they are sucked into the space. Ryung Kal’s recent works in this exhibition which she will show at Pink Gallery, lead the viewer’s attention to warm seduction, and sexy energy of life. The call in the Blooming Series (2011) is that which painted in pink awakes up freshly the spirits of viewers. Such as when spring arrives, we get to surprise by the sudden change of the nature with joy and delightfulness when we feel spring, and we get to wonder about how and when spring has come without much notice. Just like that her work moves the spirits of the viewers. In her recent work, we get to see mostly pink, yellow, orange and green color tones. These are very well showed in ’Blooming’ in 2011, ‘the Heart of Woman’ and ‘Festival’ in 2012. The colors and line which are moving with the beautiful melody, those are revealed in an organic form and wind. Just like the sound of the nature, and in the shape of leaves and organic form which are well used together by the artist it makes us to feel the quickening of energy of life. So, why don’t we send the artist a warm smile since she is inviting us to a fantastic dream world with her colors and lines?

With the color and the form, she is making human figures in her art, which they are a completion of very feminine and abstract, but also Korean and modern. Therefore, that must be a reason why we better stand for her journey as an artist.
